A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions using a set of standardized tests and procedures. This testing is performed by a neuropsychologist, a clinical psychologist with specialized training and experience in the field of neuropsychology. Pediatric neuro- psychologists have even more specialized training in working with and understanding children and adolescents. During the assessment, various mental functions are systematically tested, including, but not limited to:
• Intelligence
• Language
• Perceptual/Visuospatial Abilities
• Processing Speed
• Memory and Learning
• Attention
• Executive Functions (Problem solving, conceptualization, planning and organization, and cognitive flexibility)
• Motor Skills
• Academic abilities
• Emotional and Social Functioning, Behavior, and Personality
Honing in on the Problem & How to Fix It
Neuropsychological testing also helps us to accurately diagnose the problem. While most people have concerns about a “label” being used, a formal diagnosis is often practically necessary to obtain needed services. More importantly, an accurate and complete diagnosis points the way to effective help. You need to know what is really going on with your child to know how to address the issue most effectively.
Most importantly, the evaluation will yield detailed, specific, individually tailored, step-by-step recommendations that will help you successfully tackle the challenges that your child may face.
Let's Work Together!
At Pediatric Neuropsychology Services of Greater Hartford, LLC we believe that the only way to succeed in our goal of helping your child is to work together as a team. Each evaluation begins with a thorough history of the difficulties that are the focus of the assessment. With children and adolescents, we understand that parents are a vital source of information about their children. The voices of parents need to be heard in the evaluation – so as to enable the neuropsychologist to better understand your child.
In addition, teachers and other school professionals also provide critical information, as do physicians and other therapists who may be involved with your child. Often, the children and adolescents have much to share about their difficulties, as well. Finally, we synthesize the information we learn from these sources with data gleaned through standardized testing, along with careful and thoughtful analysis of behavior observed throughout the evaluation. This is the team we form – parents, children, teachers, other professionals, and us. We then put this information together to reveal your child's unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses, and craft a set of useful recommendations to solve the issues identified.
When is a Neuropsychological Evaluation Needed?
A neuropsychological evaluation is recommended whenever brain-based impairment in cognitive function or behavior is suspected. Typically, referrals are made to diagnose or rule out the following conditions, and to describe their impact on a person's cognitive functioning:
• Learning Disabilities & Attention Disorders
• Developmental Disabilities & Autistic Spectrum Disorders
• Traumatic Brain Injuries, Seizure Disorders, & Cerebrovascular Problems
• Neurocognitive Difficulties from Medical Conditions (e.g., Cancer)
• Psychiatric Disorders (including Mood Disorders & Problems with Anxiety)
• Substance Abuse Issues
• Personality Disorders
A neuropsychological evaluation can be crucial in determining eligibility for special education, vocational, or remedial services.
